The accord to scrap trade tariffs with the European Economic Community could provide manufacturers in Cyprus with the incentive to become more efficient, according to Antony Malaos, an official with the state Economic Planning Bureau in Cyprus. The accord takes place Jan. 1. Until now, protective tariffs and easy access to Middle East markets gave Cypriot manufacturers little reason to improve quality and efficiency, analysts in Cyprus said. Cyprus’ main exports to Europe are leather and textiles.
