Chris Evert will play an exhibition Friday with Martina Navratilova at Sanctuary Cove, Australia, despite the threat of $20,000 fines for both players.

The exhibition is in conflict with the Women’s International Tennis Assn.-backed New South Wales Open in Sydney. Evert is WITA president and Navratilova is a board member.

Evert said they will play at Sanctuary Cove because it has the new Rebound Ace surface that will be used at the Australian Open, which starts Jan. 11. The New South Wales Open is being played on grass.
