A fire that started in a forced-air heating unit caused an estimated $50,000 in damage to an El Cajon church Thursday morning, firefighters said.

The blaze broke out shortly before 5 a.m. at St. Kieran’s Roman Catholic Church on Camilo Way.

It took 28 firefighters an hour to control the fire.
