Japan’s Trade Surplus Declines in February

TOKYO — Japan’s unadjusted trade surplus fell in February from a year ago as the nation kept up a high level of foreign purchases, the Finance Ministry reported today.
The ministry said Japan’s foreign sales exceeded its foreign purchases by $5.24 billion in February, compared to a surplus of $7.13 billion in February of 1987. Imports shot up 48% from a year ago, while exports rose 17.2%.
