Avoid Unrest Areas, U.S. Travelers Told

WASHINGTON — The State Department advised Americans on Friday against going to the strife-torn Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

For the first time since the Palestinian disturbances began in early December, the department warned Americans, “Due to the continuing unrest in the West Bank and Gaza, we are advising American travelers to avoid going to these areas.”

It added: “The situation in East Jerusalem (including the Old City) is unpredictable, and Americans should check with the U.S. Consulate General in Jerusalem before entering the area.”

An Israeli official said the announcement was “unfortunate” and the Israeli Embassy is expected to issue a formal objection to the advisory, which could cut American tourism to Israel.
