Struggling Anguiano Hands Gomez 1st Loss

Never mind Hugo Anguiano’s 10-11-1 record going into Tuesday night’s semi-main event at the Reseda Country Club.

Nor that he had lost six in a row prior to his last fight.

Nor that he was facing an unbeaten fighter in Abe Gomez (10-0) of Pacoima.

Nor that Anguiano suffered a cut ear in the third round of the scheduled 10-round bout.

Anguiano, 129 1/2, of Los Angeles, overcame all those negatives to win a unanimous decision over Gomez in a featherweight bout.

Gomez, 125, was constantly beaten to the punch and was never able to mount an attack.

In the night’s co-main event, unbeaten Jesus Poll (16-0-2) won a unanimous decision but not many new fans.

Poll, a Venezuelan junior featherweight fighting out of North Hollywood for the Ten Goose Boxing Club, struggled for 10 rounds to beat Miguel Juarez (30-11-3) of Los Angeles.

In a dull, listless fight, the 122-pound Poll was unable to put enough combinations together to do much damage to Juarez, a southpaw with an awkward style. Juarez, 122 1/2, landed several good lefts but also was unable to follow up.

In the night’s first prelim, lightweight Rueben Becerrada, 135, of North Hollywood won a majority four-round decision over Gary Jackson, 129, of Los Angeles, to remain unbeaten at 2-0. It was Jackson’s professional debut.

Junior welterweight Steve Lewis, 141 1/2, of North Hollywood, looked like he was going to be an early winner in his scheduled six-round bout against Vince Dunfee, 141 3/4, of Butte, Mont. Dunfee was in trouble from the start and took a standing eight-count in the second round.

Dunfee, however, did not do much standing around after that.

He rallied and went on to a knockout victory when referee Pat Connolly stopped the bout at 2:14 of the fifth round after Lewis dropped to one knee from a barrage of punches.

Dunfee is 9-5 with eight knockouts. Lewis dropped to 4-3.

Light heavyweight Nate Hauser (6-1) of Beverly Hills won a unanimous decision over Tony Huggins (5-2) of Denver in a six-round bout.

Both fighters weighed in at 175.
