Officials in Winterset, Iowa, paid tribute to John Wayne on Wednesday by renaming the town’s busiest street after the actor, who was born there. John Wayne Drive, formerly West First Street, runs along the city’s square and in front of the two-story frame home where Wayne’s family lived from 1905 to 1910 and where Wayne was born Marion Michael Morrison on May 26, 1907. Wayne’s father, John Morrison, served as the city’s only druggist from 1905 until the family moved to Earlham, Iowa, in 1910. Wayne appeared in more than 200 films and starred in 152 of them during an acting career that spanned five decades. He died of cancer in June, 1979.
