Antoine Vitez, the 58-year-old former director of the Chaillot Theatre in Paris, was named Wednesday to head the Comedie Francaise, France’s top national theater, by Minister of Culture Jack Lang. Vitez replaces former Comedie Francaise general administrator Jean Le Poulain, who died in March. In addition to running the Chaillot, Vitez, who speaks fluent Russian and Italian, recently has directed productions of “Tartuffe” in Moscow and “The Triumph of Love” at the popular Piccolo Teatro in Milan. He is known for his knowledge of classic theatre, the specialty of the Comedie Francaise.
