On the Campaign Trail With Republican George Bush

So, Bush (apparently emboldened after his week-long fishing trip) boasts that he is going to put Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis on the defensive for a liberal record and for being a handmaiden to so-called “special-interest” groups (Part I, July 24).

Is this the same Bush who in recent weeks has vowed to place a Hispanic in his cabinet and has proposed a $2.2 billion child-care program ? If this doesn’t smack of pandering to special-interest groups, then I don’t know what does.

While Bush is readying himself to pin the “liberal” tail on the donkey this fall, he had better take care not to end up sticking himself. After all, isn’t it the elephant who never forgets? Courage, George!
