Deputy Hurt as Car Crashes in Chase

A San Diego County deputy sheriff was injured during a high-speed chase Saturday morning when his patrol car missed a roadway curve in Vista and smashed into a flood-control drainage ditch.
Mitch Clements was in good condition Saturday at Palomar Memorial Hospital in Escondido, where he was treated for a broken left shoulder and a cut above his eye.
According to Deputy Bev Creighton of the sheriff’s Vista Station, Clements was backing up Deputy James Armand, who was involved in a high-speed motorcycle chase.
About 4:50 a.m., the vehicles sped along Eucalyptus Avenue near Escondido Avenue when Clements lost control of his car and the vehicle slammed into the ditch, Creighton said.
Clements radioed from his car that he was injured, and the pursuit was ended. The Sheriff’s Department declined to provide any other details about the crash.
