Resemblance is definitely not flattery, so far as actor-director-producer Robert Redford is concerned. Redford has been peppered with questions for comment about Republican vice presidential candidate Sen. Dan Quayle (R-Ind.) ever since the latter’s nomination. But it wasn’t until recent allegations that Quayle used undue family influence to sidestep active service in the Vietnam War that Redford has spoken up. “This whole thing sounds like Quayle droppings to me,” said Redford in a statement. “I’d like people to know I’m voting for (Democratic Presidential candidate) Michael Dukakis.” Ironically enough, an Indianapolis lawyer and law school classmate of Quayle, Frank Pope, was quoted in the Washington Post on Friday as saying the Indiana senator’s political aspirations had been inspired in part by “The Candidate,” a 1972 film in which Redford starred as an idealistic, young aspirant.
