Veteran film actor Hurd Hatfield offered a glittering black-tie audience attending a recent benefit for the Washington chapter of the American Film Institute a bit a of a surprise. After a screening of his 1938 film “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” the 70-year-old veteran film actor made the crowd gasp by rolling up to the stage in a wheelchair, then leaping from the chair. “People usually think I’m dead anyway, so I thought I’d give you a little surprise,” he said. It worked.
