COMING ATTRACTIONS

Works from what is being called the most important group of contemporary paintings ever to come to auction will be exhibited in Los Angeles today, prior to a sale in New York at which experts predict record prices. The 32 works are from a collection amassed over 50 years by manufacturer Burton Tremaine, and his late wife, Emily. Scheduled to be shown in the Maisonette Room at the Beverly Hills Hotel, the complete collection is also being shown to potential bidders in Chicago, Tokyo, London and New York, where the auction will take place on Nov. 9. The star of the auction is considered to be Jasper Johns’ “White Flag,” a monochromatic 1955 rendering of the U.S. flag. The work could bring as much as $7 million in auction, a record for a modern painting. Also included: works by Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Willem de Kooning and Franz Kline.
