Law Amended to Cut Tribal Paper Work

WASHINGTON — President Reagan on Wednesday signed a bill designed to ease the administrative responsibilities of American Indians.
The bill amends a 1975 law under which a tribal governing body may contract for medical care, housing, social and government services that otherwise would be provided through the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Tribal leaders had requested changes in the law because, they said, it imposed burdensome administrative requirements on them. Among other things, the new legislation exempts tribal construction contracts from federal procurement rules and regulations.
