Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

Robin Williams says an ex-lover who claims he gave her herpes has used “duress, coercion and fraud” since 1985 in an effort to extort money from him. Williams filed a complaint in San Francisco Superior Court on Thursday against Michelle Tish Carter--who, in 1986, had filed a $6-million suit against Williams. The comedian’s suit contends that in November, 1985, Carter told Williams she had contacted herpes, a sexually transmitted disease. Two medical tests, the suit said, proved negative. Williams tried to break off the relationship, but Carter “claimed she was pregnant by Williams and demanded $20,000 and a new car,” the complaint charged.
