The Rhythm and Blues Foundation shows in Austin, Tex., last weekend raised some $51,000. Then main R&B; man Ahmet Ertegun, head of Atlantic Records, tossed in another $1.5 million for the cause--to help aging R&B; legends with legal fees in order to go after royalties they are owed. The concerts starred old-timers Ruth Brown, Chuck Jackson, Sam Moore of Sam & Dave and the reunited Clovers along with relative newcomers like Bonnie Raitt, the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie Ray Vaughan. There was a celebrity auction in which an autographed copy of Michael Jackson’s autobiography, “Moonwalk,” went for $160, and autographed guitars from the Thunderbirds and ZZ Top brought in $1,100 each. But the most spirited bidding was over a pair of pink panties that guest emcee Margot Kidder donated from her “Superman” movies.
