Light Winds, Fog Slow Race to Cabo San Lucas

Light, shifty southerly breezes and continued fog made slow going of the first 16 hours of L.A. Yacht Club’s 876-mile Cabo San Lucas via Guadalupe Island race.
At the 6 a.m. Sunday position report the lead yachts in the 36-boat fleet had not passed San Diego. The race started Saturday at noon in light winds and dense fog.
Leading the pack was Harold Ward’s Nelson-Marek 68 Cheval out of California Yacht Club, only 58.8 miles from the start. The slowest boat was the 73-foot Kialoa II, once one of the fastest ocean-racing yachts afloat, which hovered only 22 miles and was struggling to get past Newport Beach. John Scripps’ 79-foot ketch Miramar had covered 35 miles and was barely past Dana Point.
