MIAMI — Vice President George Bush coasted to a huge victory in Florida, adding 21 electoral votes to his column from a state that Democrat Michael S. Dukakis virtually surrendered in mid-campaign.
In what was shaping up as a test of Bush’s coattails, Republican Connie Mack, conservative grandson of a Baseball Hall of Famer, and Kenneth (Buddy) MacKay, a Democrat loaded down with endorsements whom Mack had derided with the taunt “Hey, Buddy, you’re liberal,” were locked in battle for a U.S. Senate seat left vacant by retiring three-term Democratic Sen. Lawton Chiles.
Floridians also voted on a proposition to make English the official state language, a measure controversial in a state with a large Latino population.
