NATIONAL ELECTION RETURNS : State-by-State Election Reports of Key Races and Issues : Alabama

MONTGOMERY — Vice President George Bush won Alabama’s nine electoral votes, but Republicans had little hope of making substantial gains in state and local races.
With 91% of the precincts counted, Bush had 751,892 or 60% of the votes, to Michael S. Dukakis’ 507,501 votes, or 40%.
A record 274 Republican nominees were running for office in Alabama, but state GOP political director Steve French predicted only modest coattails from the national ticket, even in a landslide.
Alabama went for President Reagan in 1980 and 1984, and Bush was the lopsided favorite over Dukakis in a series of polls over the past two months.
The makeup of the state’s congressional delegation--five Democrats and two Republicans--was not expected to change. The closest race was in the 1st District between Republican Rep. Sonny Callahan and Democratic challenger John Tyson.
