TOPEKA — George Bush harvested the seven electoral votes of the Republican-dominated home state of his one-time rival for the presidential nomination, Sen. Bob Dole.
With 44% of the precincts reporting, Bush had 264,254, or 55% of the vote, to Democrat Michael S. Dukakis’ 211,948, or 45%.
A lopsided Republican advantage in voter registration helped Bush pull steadily ahead. Of the state’s 1.12 million registered voters, 42% are Republicans, 29% Democrats and another 29% unaffiliated. Kansas voted only twice for Democrats in modern times--Franklin D. Roosevelt over Alf Landon in 1936 and Lyndon B. Johnson over Barry Goldwater in 1964.
The state’s three Republican and two Democratic House members won reelection overwhelmingly.
