Arts and entertainment reports from The Times, national and international news services and the nation's press

The 50th anniversary of American Ballet Theatre (founded in 1940) will be celebrated with an 18-month season and a number of special events, artistic director Mikhail Baryshnikov said Wednesday in New York. The plans include a retrospective of company repertory along with extended U.S. and international touring, a traveling exhibition of company memorabilia, a new PBS “Dance in America” telecast and a gala performance in New York next January. The company also has a new logo: a fuzzy blue ballerina trailing red and white veils. Philip Morris Companies Inc. is sponsoring the celebration and national tour with a grant of $750,000.
