With Eye on Bigger Things, Soccer League to Grow by Three Teams for ’89 Season

The Western Soccer League has expanded from six to nine teams for the 1989 season, continuing progress toward the formation of a National Soccer League, San Diego Nomad Coach Derek Armstrong said Tuesday.

The newest additions to the league are Arizona Condors (Phoenix), Real Santa Barbara and the Sacramento Jazz. A fourth addition, Salt Lake City, will wait until 1990.

The WSL parallels the 12-team American Soccer League on the East Coast. Armstrong said he expects the two will merge into a NSL by either the 1990 or 1991 season, with the WSL forming the Western Division.
