The design for a national peace memorial, to be located at Hains Point near the intersection of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers in Washington, will be selected in September following a nationwide competition similar to one conducted for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in 1980. The open competition for the design of the memorial, which is expected to cost between $4 million and $6 million, carries a $20,000 prize for the winner. The director of the competition, Paul Spreiregen, said a jury of eight professionals will judge the entries.
