Local News in Brief : Monterey Park Names Police Chief

A Los Angeles Police Department commander, Ken G. Hickman, has been named as Monterey Park’s new police chief, despite a campaign by supporters of a local favorite, Capt. Joseph Santoro, a 22-year veteran of the Monterey Park force.

Hickman, 48, is the commander of the West Los Angeles bureau, which includes Hollywood, West Los Angeles, Los Angeles International Airport and Pacific Palisades. Hickman, who has a doctorate in criminal justice from Claremont Graduate School, will replace Chief Robert Collins, who has retired.

“Hickman has an excellent track record in working well with different ethnic groups,” City Manager Mark Lewis said Monday.
