The Yugoslav Parliament endorsed the selection of Ante Markovic as premier, giving official sanction to his capitalist-style reform policies aimed at easing the Communist nation’s grave economic and political crisis. Markovic, a 64-year-old former business manager who was elected president of Croatia in 1982, promptly warned the Balkan nation that inflation could reach 1,000% by July. He said Yugoslavia can only recover through deregulation of the economy, with genuinely free markets in goods, capital and labor.
