Play It Again, Sam: The assistant manager of the public radio station in the wind-swept community of Sand Point, Alaska, has come up with a novel way of raising money. Lauretta MacBeth, with permission from Turner Entertainment Company, is playing the 1942 movie classic “Casablanca” over the radio. “With all our funds being cut we had to think of creative ways of raising money,” said MacBeth. Her efforts to get permission to air the Humphrey Bogart-Ingrid Bergman classic finally led to Roger Mayer, president of Turner Entertainment Co. and guardian of the company’s estimated 3,300-film library. “It is unusual,” Mayer said of the request. “We would not be doing it if it was a commercial station. They’re remote and they’re trying to raise money.” The station, which serves about 2,600 listeners throughout the top of the Aleutian Islands, hopes to raise $10,000 during the drive. As for MacBeth, she’s due to lose her job April 6 as a result of station budget cuts.
