A special environmental study of the nation’s biological warfare research program, ordered by a federal court settlement two years ago, has concluded such work is safe to the environment and essential to national security, the Army reported. The Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement concludes that laboratory research with biological materials is “potentially hazardous,” but that “elaborate controls (have been developed) to assure adequate protection for the environment,” the Army said.
