Reliever Gibbs Helps SDSU to Unusual No-Hitter

SAN DIEGO — San Diego State pitcher Jim Gibbs was part of a strange no-hitter in the Aztecs’ 14-0 victory over Air Force Sunday in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Smith Field.

SDSU starter Kevin Nielsen had control problems, recording one out and issuing two walks before being replaced by Gibbs, who induced a double play and retired the next 18 batters in the seven-inning game. Gibbs (3-0), a senior right-hander, hadn’t pitched since April 5.

SDSU (29-19, 11-5) lost the second game, 3-2. Air Force is 21-21, 8-8.
