New York’s Museum of Modern Art has received a major gift from art dealer Leo Castelli: Robert Rauschenberg’s 1955 “Bed,” a large “combine painting” composed of the artist’s quilt, sheet and pillow attacked with thick paint. Estimates of the work’s value range from $7 million to $10 million. Rauschenberg’s use of everyday objects influenced Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg and others. Rauschenberg, in a telephone interview with the New York Times from his home in Captiva, Fla., said, “I’m very proud of Leo for giving it to the museum. I don’t like masterpieces having one-night stands in collectors’ homes between auctions.”
