President and Mrs. Bush will become the third presidential couple to host a series of “In Performance at the White House” musicales on PBS. The series of three programs will be tied to holidays, starting with Independence Day. The first, due to be taped June 18 at the White House for airing July 5, will feature opera star Simon Estes, Tony Award-winning singer-actress Judy Kaye and ragtime pianist Joshua Rifkin. Other concerts are tentatively planned around Columbus Day and Thanksgiving. “In Performance” started in 1978 with a series of classical musical recitals hosted by the Carters. The Reagans were involved with three seasons featuring young performers, tributes to American composers and salutes to Broadway.
