Former Astronaut to Head Space Station Program

WASHINGTON — Former astronaut William Lenoir was named head of America’s ambitious space station Freedom project Thursday and got orders to plan the consolidation of the shuttle and space station programs.
Lenoir, 40, veteran of a November, 1982, flight of the shuttle Columbia and a backup astronaut for the Skylab program, will replace James Odom as NASA’s associate administrator for the station.
Odom and other space agency managers left the National Aeronautics and Space Administration recently before new conflict of interest laws take effect prohibiting government officials from working in related industries.
