A three-judge panel of the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously overturned the racketeering convictions of Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer’s father and reputed mobster Carlos Marcello. Charles E. Roemer II, commissioner of administration under former Gov. Edwin W. Edwards, and Marcello were convicted in 1981 of conspiracy to violate federal racketeering laws in the FBI’s “Brilab” sting operation aimed at bribing state officials. Roemer, 67, served 15 months of a three-year term. Marcello, 79, given a seven-year sentence and facing a 10-year term in another case, remains in prison.
