Emerson Fittipaldi took the provisional pole for Sunday’s Marlboro Grand Prix at the Meadowlands, despite having to switch to a backup car after a practice session. Fittipaldi broke his own qualifying record of 113.632 m.p.h. with a lap of 114.589 m.p.h.
