Two of seven regional “Baby Bell” telephone companies reached a settlement with their workers, averting a walkout by 83,000 employees. The Communications Workers of America and U S West, based in Denver, reached a settlement keeping 42,000 workers on the job. In St. Louis, negotiators with Southwestern Bell averted a strike by 41,000 workers in five states. But CWA struck Ameritech, which serves 12.3 million customers in Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.
