San Marino 32, Hoover 7--Hoover’s frustrating night ended with Hoover Coach Dennis Hughes angrily shouting at San Marino Coach Bill Maloney after the Titans scored on an 89-yard pass from Eric Walcha to D. R. Moreland with 43 seconds left at Glendale High.

“That’s just . . .,” Hughes said. “He did that to us two years ago and he’s always got the same excuse. If that sounds like sour grapes, that’s because it is.”

Hoover (2-2) scored its only touchdown after lineman Charles Bames blocked a San Marino punt that was recovered by Ara Balkian at the San Marino one-yard line. James Potter scored on the next play and David Bonner’s point-after tied the score, 7-7, with 2:51 left in the first half.

After trailing, 13-7, at halftime, Hoover’s offense went into hiding. The Tornadoes (2-2) mustered just 64 yards in the second half and turned the ball over four times.

Kevin Shanahan rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns for San Marino (2-1). Hoover managed just 136 yards in the game. James Cottrell completed eight of 16 passes for 62 yards and threw two interceptions.
