SIDELINES : A. J. Foyt Fair, Stable After Crash

CONCORD, N.C. — Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A. J. Foyt was listed in fair and stable condition today, a day after being injured in a crash, and his crew chief said Foyt could be out of the hospital Thursday.

Tex Powell, the crew chief, confirmed the 54-year-old Foyt hit the wall at Charlotte Motor Speedway hard enough to crack his helmet. Powell said Foyt sustained bruises to his neck and chest when he hit a diagonal steel tube that runs through the cockpit as part of the car’s protective roll cage.

“He had a bad headache, but he was fairly comfortable,” Powell said.

Foyt was injured during a practice session for Sunday’s All-Pro Auto Parts 500. Powell said Foyt would likely miss Sunday’s race.
