The Kansas City Royals exercised their option for next year on Bret Saberhagen, the leading candidate for the American League Cy Young Award after a 23-6 season.

Saberhagen will get $1.375 million in the option year. His previous two-year contract paid him $1.1 million in 1988 and $1.25 million in 1989.
