7.1 Quake Jolts Japan; No Damage Reported

TOKYO — A major earthquake rocked northeastern Japan early today, and more than 6,000 residents of a coastal area 300 miles northeast of Tokyo were evacuated as a precaution against seismic-caused waves, officials reported.
No major damage or casualties were reported, and the evacuation order was lifted after 3 1/2 hours as the danger of such waves, called tsunami, subsided.
The quake, centered 18 miles below the seabed and 80 miles off Japan’s main Honshu island, had a magnitude estimated at 7.1, the same as the Oct. 17 quake in the San Francisco Bay area.
