Nicaragua Ends Contra Truce

Ortega is obviously gambling that the U.S. government will ultimately consider a Contra slaughter preferable to Contra military aid. With the Contras eliminated as a potential force to resist fraudulent elections, belated U.S. military aid would find no one left to do anything with it.
With polls showing that the opposition candidate stands a good chance of winning a fair election, it defies common sense about the charge that the Contras are wantonly killing innocent civilians.
