Smokers in the European Communities will be inhaling less tar and getting stronger health warnings following the adoption today of two laws by the EC’s health ministers.

In an effort to achieve a 15% drop in cancer deaths by the year 2000, the EC’s health ministers said a maximum 15 milligrams of tar per cigarette must be the norm in all EC member states except Greece by Dec. 31, 1992, dropping to 12 milligrams by Dec. 31, 1997.
