SOUTHLAND : Pro-Choice Democrat Killea Wins by 50.64%; Foe Concedes

Assemblywoman Lucy Killea, whose state Senate campaign drew national attention when she was denied Communion by a Catholic bishop because of her pro-choice abortion commercials, narrowly upset her opponent, who conceded the election today.
Killea, a four-term Democratic legislator running in a heavily Republican district, led her GOP opponent, freshman Assemblywoman Carol Bentley, by 1,528 votes after all 536 precincts reported Tuesday in a San Diego-area special election.
Including absentee ballots returned before Election Day, Killea received 60,012 votes, or 50.64%, to 58,484 votes, or 49.36%, for Bentley.
Between 2,500 and 3,000 absentee ballots turned in at the polls still have to be counted, however, a process that election officials said would start this afternoon. But Bentley said at a news conference today that she does not think the votes will make a difference.
