Sid Fernandez became the fifth New York Mets starting pitcher to get a multiyear contract, agreeing to a three-year deal for $6.05 million with a $2.1 option for 1993. Fernandez was 14-5 last season with a 2.83 earned-run average in 32 starts. He is 59-45 in five major league seasons.

Fernandez joins Dwight Gooden, Ron Darling, Frank Viola and Bob Ojeda as Met pitchers signed through 1991. David Cone is the only starter without a multiyear contract.

The Mets also signed right-hander Rocky Childress to a minor league contract with Tidewater of the Class AAA International League.
