LOCAL : Suspect Critical After Collision

A suspected car thief was in critical condition today after colliding with a van at a Santa Ana intersection, ending a two-minute police pursuit.

Chauncey Collins, 20, of Santa Ana, suffered major head injuries and is in critical condition at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana after he was thrown from the Toyota Tercel he was driving, police said. His passenger, Jennifer Mann, 18, of Tustin suffered a broken collarbone, police said.

Charges against the two are pending, Maureen Thomas, a police spokesperson, said.

Police were chasing the Toyota west on Willits Street at about 40 m.p.h. when it ran a red light at Fairview Street and was broadsided by a van traveling southbound Sunday night, Thomas said.

The driver of the van was unharmed, she said.
