Long Beach : Council Asked to Set Aside Time for Public Comments

Long Beach residents who want to address the City Council about matters not listed on the weekly meeting agenda must sometimes wait through three-fourths of the day before they are given a chance to go to the podium to make their comments.
According to council regulations, the public cannot speak about non-agenda items until the end of the meeting, which may come as late as 5 p.m., depending on how busy the council is.
Long Beach Area Citizens Involved, a citywide political group, wants to change that. With the backing of some 19 community groups, LBACI is proposing that the council set aside a specified time during its meetings for members of the public to comment on non-agenda matters.
The proposal, introduced by Councilman Evan Anderson Braude, was sent this week to a council committee for review.
