SIDELINES : Ex-State Boxing Champ Dies

YAKIMA, Wash. — Henry Woods, who once fought Barney Ross for the world welterweight championship, has died of heart failure in a Yakima hospital. He was 75.
Woods began his boxing career at the age of 14 in 1929, lying about his age, and fought until 1942, compiling a 115-9 record. He won state lightweight titles in Washington and California.
The peak of his career came in 1935 when he lasted all 12 rounds with Ross and lost a decision. He never earned another title shot.
Woods, who died Tuesday, worked as a shipbuilder in Tacoma after leaving the ring and retired to Yakima in 1977.
