For best results, follow this advice from Stephen Roedler, director of the Manhattan Arts and Antiques Center, the oldest and largest antiques collective in the country.

* Specialize. Concentrate on a single period or genre.

* Study. Take courses and visit museums to learn what factors make antiques most valuable.

* Socialize. Join historical societies or clubs to meet like-minded collectors. Get to know dealers in the specialty area whose tastes are admired.

* Browse. Get an overview of prices and selection before buying.

* Buy quality. Obtain the best items, even it if means buying less.
