Plan to Streamline School Construction OKd

In an effort to generate more classroom seats by streamlining the school construction process and expanding financing options, the Los Angeles school board Monday unanimously approved an ambitious plan requiring the school district to examine its building practices, seek more local autonomy in funding schools and explore partnerships with private companies.
The long-range plan, developed by Westside representative Mark Slavkin, is intended to bypass what Slavkin called a myriad of state-imposed constraints that limit availability of funds and require a cumbersome review process that slows the district down in its effort to build enough schools to meet the growing demand.
“It’s either a wish list or the beginning of the district’s first comprehensive plan” to address the building woes that have created a severe space shortage in city schools, said board President Jackie Goldberg.
