France Would Return Lithuanian Gold: The Bank of France said it may return to Lithuania 2.2 tons of gold valued at $28 million that Lithuania deposited in France in 1940 before it became part of the Soviet Union. “The Bank of France has always respected its commitments,” a bank spokesman said. “She will return the gold to the Lithuanian authorities the French government could eventually recognize.” France has not formally recognized the new Lithuanian government.
