This brief, heavily illustrated 79-page entry more closely resembles an ambitious concert program than a conventional book, but it is an exceptionally valuable work at a time when attacks against rap music--arguably the most vital and revolutionary new form of pop since the birth of rock--are increasing. A belated companion piece to last year’s “Self Destruction,” an anti-violence record featuring such noted rap figures as Kool Moe Dee and Public Enemy’s Chuck D., the book is a fervent cry against black-on-black crime, including letters from teen-age blacks who have been touched by violence. Proceeds go to the National Urban League to support its work on literacy, education and other community issues.
