100 Protest at UCLA to Keep Chicano Studies

About 100 students rallied at UCLA in Westwood Wednesday to protest what they fear could lead to a dismantling of the Chicano Studies major--even though administrators say the major is not in danger right now.
One protester reportedly kicked a small hole in the wall next to the office of UCLA Chancellor Charles E. Young and the chancellor’s nameplate was taken from his door. No arrests were made.
A university committee has concluded the Chicano Studies major did not meet UCLA’s “high standards of academic excellence” and recommended a halt in admissions to the major until the program is reformed. However, any such action requires several more levels of review. Only a dozen undergraduates major in Chicano Studies.
